As anti-quota agitation gained pace in different parts of Madhya Pradesh, over 50 medical students and junior doctors, along with some faculty members in Indore on Friday decided to register protest by returning their gold medals won by them for academic excellence.
"Gold medals won by junior doctors, medical students and senior doctors were collected and will be sent to the President tomorrow as a mark of protest against the proposed quota hike," Junior Doctors Association (JDA) General Secretary Anand Rai said in Indore.
Even senior faculty members like MY Hospital Dean DK Jain and consultants Dr Apoorva Pouranik, Brijesh Lahoti and Dr Arvind Shukla have returned the gold medals and certificates won by them for academic excellence, he claimed adding "the agitation will continue till our demands are met with".
As reports of protests poured in from other cities including Gwalior, Rewa and Jabalpur, relay hunger strike by junior doctors in Bhopal continued even as a "pro-quota" section of the post-graduate medical students joined duty at Hamidia Hospital, sources said.
"Around 97 pro-quota junior doctors have resumed work," hospital Dean SC Tiwari said, adding normalcy returned as over 662 patients were examined in the OPD, 116 patients were admitted and 37 surgeries were carried out in the hospital.
