Defence Minister AK Anthony held a closed-door meeting in Tezpur on Tuesday with Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and top Army commanders to review the security situation in the state in the wake of the killing of 69 non-Assamese migrant workers by the ULFA.

Antony, who was accompanied to Assam by Army Chief Gen JJ Singh, also discussed operational and administrative matters with commanders of the 4 Corps that is responsible for anti-insurgency operations under the Unified Command against the banned ULFA, defence sources said.

During the meeting, Gogoi highlighted the prevailing situation in the state and urged Anthony to gear up military action against the militants terrorising Hindi-speaking migrants, sources said.

The future course of action or strategies to be adopted by the Army in its operations were not divulged by the sources.

Anthony was briefed by the commander of 4 Corps, Lt Gen RK Chabra, the commander of 5 Mountain Division, Lt Gen KS Jamwal, and other senior officers at the Unified Command structure, sources said.

The defence minister will also visit Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, they said.
