Any Cong-led govt without PDP will be unstable: Baig

People's Democratic Party vice-President Muzaffar Baig said any Congress-led government in Jammu and Kashmir without the presence of his party will be "unstable" and asserted that the two parties needed each other in providing a "stable and responsive" government. "We need them (Congress). They need us. We must respect the verdict of the people," he said.

"Our efforts will be to continue talks to form a stable government in cooperation with the Congress and I hope doors are not closed by the Congress (on talks with PDP) because Congress is a larger party," Baig said.

Baig's remarks came in response to comments by President of the J&K unit of Congress Ghulam Nabi Azad on how long can the Congress go on in holding parleys with the PDP to break the deadlock on the Chief Ministership issue.

"We need them (Congress). They need us. We must respect the verdict of the people and provide a responsible, stable government," he said.

Baig said the stand taken by PDP on the Chief Minitership issue has been misunderstood and regretted that the whole thing has become "messy".

"With the NC and the PDP sitting in the Opposition, it would be difficult for them (Congress) to provide a stable government. I don't think Congress will approach any factions of NC and PDP," he said.

Rise above vested interests, form govt: BJP

Accusing Congress and the PDP of indulging in "selfish" politics, the BJP today asked the elected representatives in Jammu and Kashmir to respect the people's mandate and form a Government in the state.

"We want the Congress, the PDP and all elected representatives in the state to respect the victory of democracy in the state and the sacrifices of the people for it and rise above vested political interests," BJP General Secretary Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told reporters in New Delhi.

He said the people wanted a government which would take the responsibility of combating cross-border terrorism from Pakistan and work for the development of the state.

Asserting that the people of the state had ensured the defeat of terrorism, he accused Congress and the PDP of sacrificing the victory of democracy because of selfish political interests.

"The BJP believes that the people of the state have given a befitting reply to terrorism sending a message to the entire world. The Congress and PDP should respect that," he said.
