Following a rumour that the train had caught fire, passengers of the Alleppey-Dhanbad Express pulled the alarm chain, jumped on the tracks and were run over by another train coming from the opposite direction.

Among the dead, two are children.

The injured are being rushed to the nearby hospitals, from where they could be taken to Visakhapatnam. There are also fears that the toll may go up.

The district collector and superintendent of police are at the accident site.

A railway official told HT there was no fire or smoke. A probe could be ordered into the incident.

On October 30, 45 people died when a bus caught fire in Mahbubnagar district.
