'AP govt has taken significant measures to combat terror'

The Andhra Pradesh government has taken concrete steps like formation of an elite force and imparting commando training to armed police units among other measures to combat terror,Governor N D Tiwari said in Hyderabad on Monday.

"My government has taken significant measures to combat terrorism like formation of an elite force OCTOPUS, Command Training of Armed Police Units and setting up of two thousand CCTVs in Hyderabad," Tiwari said in his Republic Day address after unfurling the National Flag and inspecting the Republic Day Parade at the parade grounds.

"Among others, it has also taken steps to spread awareness on dangers of terrorism and promotion of Civil Defence as part of campaign to keep terrorism at bay," he said.

In the last four-and-a-half years, the government has succeeded in generating eight lakh jobs and 75 lakh persons were provided pensions of Rs 200 every month, Tiwari said.

Under the flagship 'Jalayagnam' (irrigation mission) programme, as many as 19 lakh acres have been brought under cultivation with completion of 20 irrigation projects.

The 83-year-old leader sang a patriotic song in Hindi after the completion of his speech.
