Apart from modernising teachings, management of the seminaries have taken several steps to allay apprehensions that madrassas have become "breeding centre for terrorists".

The management of madrassas under Jamia Islamic Darul Uloom has made submission of residential proof, birth certificate and other documents compulsory.

"In view of growing suspicion about madrassas inmates, we are enforcing existing (admission) rules effectively," Jamia general secretary Mohammed Raheemuddin Ansari told PTI.

"Submission of residential proof like ration card, birth certificate and other documents have been made compulsory at the time of admission," he said.

Rejecting charges levelled against the madrassas of "breeding terrorists", he said, "No religious school teaches its students to adopt the path of violence."

However, some organisations like RSS and BJP were engaged in false propaganda that madrassas are "breeding place for terrorists", he said.

"We have taken all precautions to rebut the allegations of fundamental groups and introduced foolproof mechanism for admission...These measures were essential under the present circumstances to uphold the reputation of the institutions imparting religious education," Ansari said.

However, the main thrust would be on teaching Islamic values, Ansari said.
