The Andhra Pradesh State Human Rights Commission (APSHRC) on Saturday directed the police to prohibit transmission of 'Aata-5 Young Reality-show', a show involving children telecast on a Telugu entertainment channel.
Noting that this reality show meant for young, is in clear violation of human rights of children, APSHRC Chairman Justice B Subhashan Reddy, directed the Hyderabad Commissioner of Police A K Khan to invoke provisions of the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act 1995, to prohibit the TV show.
Alleging commercial exploitation of children in some TV reality shows of local channels, some city-based voluntary organisations had approached the APSHRC in April seeking ban on such shows while parents of the children, who took part in them, had contended that there was no violation of children's rights in the TV reality show.
The commissioner was further directed to see whether any such similar programmes were being telecast on other TV channels including the advertisements under the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986 and to exercise similar powers for prohibiting their transmission and to file compliance report before the Commission on June 14.
The APSHRC Chairman who heard arguments, both for prohibition of the reality show and of the parents supporting the same, had examined materials and CDs submitted by both the parties.
