The recent You Tube clip showing Hrithik Roshan swearing the F-word, has stirred up quite a heated argument among his fans. Some feel the video is obscene and ought to be pulled off the site, others defend the actor’s right to freedom of speech. We find out where young Delhiites stand on the issue of using the F-word, in everyday talk and on the big screen.
Visit any youth hangout and you’ll hear this four-letter word being used quite nonchalantly. As 19-year-old Vrinda, a student of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College, puts it, the word has become a part of daily lingo — so much so that even young kids know its meaning. “And,” she says, “it sounds more decent than the Hindi cuss words.”
“It’s the most common word to express disappointment,” college mate Abhinav Sharma feels. Shambhavi Singh of Jesus and Mary College, is all for the freedom to use the f*** word. “I’m okay with it because it’s the 21st
century. We simply can’t live up to the ideals of the Stone Age!” She agrees with Vrinda when she says that Hindi swear words used in movies are no better.
Other college-goers are not as liberal, though. Nineteen-year-old Rachita Jain of SRCC, contends that profanity should be kept out of films, as that it’s the main cause for increased usage of the word in everyday life. However, Akshat Rana, 21, a student of Amity University, says, “Rather than censoring such scenes completely, there should be age-based ratings, like there in the US.”
