IN A major dacoity, nearly two-dozen dacoits armed with crude bombs, country-made pistols, swords and rods entered the factory prominent century-old jewellery shop ‘Sahu Jewellers’ in Chhindwara and decamped with jewellery worth Rs 1 crore.
They threw crude bombs and fired discriminately, inflicting a bullet injury on jeweller Lokesh Sahu, who was reported to be critical. Five other people were also injured in the attack with sharp-edged weapons.
The dacoits, who had come in jeeps, executed the robbery at the shop situated in Purana Chhapakhana area under City Kotwali by unleashing a reign of terror within 10 minutes by exploding crude bombs and firing indiscriminately to scare away passers-by.
When contacted, the Kotwali Station in-charge Inspector O P Patwar said that the police were calculating the exact amount of the looted jewellery.
According to reports reaching the divisional headquarters here, the dacoits entered the Sahu jewellery shop around 7.30 pm, hurling bombs, sending the employees and nearby people scurrying for safety. Some of them fired from pistols leaving Lokesh Sahu injured before decamping with some hard cash and jewellery including diamonds worth Rs 1 crore.
The police cordoned off the city and a strict vigil was being maintained at the railway station and the bus stand. Meanwhile, bullion merchants in the town called a bandh tomorrow in protest against the attack on the factory.
