In a major haul, a huge cache of arms, assorted ammunition and explosives was seized on Monday from different parts of Assam even as officials said they were meant for carrying out subversive activities in the state in the run-up to the Republic Day.

Four AK rifles were seized from Lakhipathar reserve forest in Tinsukia district while the police seized an equal number of rifles and six universal machine guns in neighbouring Dibrugarh district's Mahmora area.

According to Dibrugarh SP Anurag Agarwal, the consignment was meant for ULFA's newly trained cadre and for violence.

In Karbi Anglong, army from a reserved forest at Bhelughat under Howraghat police station seized a large quantity of assorted ammunition and explosives allegedly hidden by Karbi Longri NC Hills Liberation Front militants for use during Republic Day, defence officials said.

The seizures included 337 AK series bullets, 163 rounds of 9mm pistols, 95 rounds of 7.62 pistols, 500 gm explosives, 235 detonators and eight m of safety fuse wire.

On Saturday, 27 AK rifles, M-22 and Chinese rifles, belonging to the ULFA were seized from Sadiya in Tinsukia.

Meanwhile, the KLNLF has urged the government to create an atmosphere for peace talks by suspending operations against it and threatened to withdraw its ceasefire from February if this was not done. The government, on the other hand, has sought an official communique from the group.
