Troops of the 14 Rashtriya Rifles on Tuesday mounted an operation against the separatists in village Sumlar, near Bandipora township in Baramulla, 45 km from Srinagar.

"The village was cordoned off on specific inputs that terrorists were hiding inside. As the operation was in progress, the hiding terrorists opened fire on the troops, resulting in the death of a captain. The encounter is still on and additional forces have been rushed to the site," a senior police official said in Srinagar.

On Monday, the day the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan started, separatist guerrillas killed a woman police constable in the summer capital Srinagar. Five other people - three cops and two civilians - were wounded in the attack.
