For the first time, the Pakistani Army on Thursday “shared intelligence” with India on terrorist movement along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. The two sides exchanged sensitive information not once but twice in the Mendhar and Chammb sectors.
Top Army officials in J&K confirmed to Hindustan Times that Pakistani sector commanders warned the Indian side about suspicious movement of “some unwanted elements” trying to cross into Indian territory.
Army headquarters in the capital however denied such a development, saying it was preposterous to suggest that Pakistan would share actionable intelligence. “Our troops foiled the infiltration bid in Mendhar sector independently. It has been conveyed to the Defence Ministry that there was no information sharing,” a senior officer said.
Nevertheless, top Army officials in J&K insisted Indian commanders were “informed beforehand” that Pakistani troops would be engaging the “miscreants” across the LoC in Mendhar’s Nangi Tekri area to “sort them out”. A top official said on Friday, “We were told over the hotline by Pakistani army officials that Indian troops should not get worried. It is beyond our understanding why Army headquarters is denying it.”
Pakistani military spokesperson Major General Athar Abbas told HT that the identity of the miscreants could not be established as they escaped under the cover of darkness in the heavily forested area. He said, “Our troops exchanged small arms fire with the miscreants. Four troops were killed.”
