Locals residing in the flood-ravaged areas of Shiv Pora, Indira Nagar and Batawara in Srinagar had on Thursday all praise for the ongoing army efforts in the area.
“The army started rescue operations just a few days after the floods hit our area on September 6. It was the army that reached us first, as the local administration took weeks together to reach here,” said Pervaiz Ahmad, a resident of Batawara locality.
Nearly 50 structures are completely damaged in the locality and the army is cleaning up the area to contain spread of any disease.
“Garbage collection, drainage and sanitation remain our priority area. We have already removed 5,000 tonnes of garbage since September 19. Around 50 carcasses were also treated,” said Shriyas Patel, chief executive officer of the Badamibagh cantonment board.
Just 3 km interiors of Shiv Pora from the main road, devastation is visible with walls and houses razed all along the stretch. The army has sought the help of a local mosque to streamline the relief operations.
“The army helped us to clear the roads of debris,” said Irfan Ahmad, a local, adding, “The state administration completely failed us.”
The lanes of badly-affected Indira Nagar were also made fit by the army for plying traffic. “The army restored traffic and helped in rescue operations too,” said Poopinder Singh, a local Granthi of Indira Nagar.
