A major tragedy was averted in Assam on Monday with army soldiers detecting a powerful explosive targeting the Kolkata-bound Kamrup Express train.
An army spokesman said soldiers of the 44 Field Regiment detected a bomb strapped to a bicycle at the Namrup railway station in eastern Assam.
"The bomb was definitely aimed at targeting the Kamrup Express. A major disaster was averted with the timely intervention by our soldiers," an army officer said.
"The train was packed with passengers when the bomb was detected."
Meanwhile, members of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) on Monday unfurled the outfit's white and green flag with red rising sun in public places to mark its 29th foundation day.
The police had a tough time bringing down the flags from various parts of Assam.
The police also seized an ULFA flag from the Guwhati University campus.
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has urged the ULFA to come for peace talks with the government to end the three-decade long violent insurgency.
"Let the ULFA come for unconditional peace talks. We want them to come for a negotiated settlement to the problem," the chief minister said.
