Army honours its bravehearts

The Indian Army may be in the grip of crisis with a severe shortage of young officers, but there seems to be no dearth of courage among those young men who are serving in it as officers. The Army’s Western Command conferred gallantry awards to 18 personnel, in New Delhi on Sunday, of which 12 are young officers — holding the ranks of Major or below.

Major Uday Ganpat Rao Jarande from the Corps of Artillery received the Sena medal for the second time. The SM (bar) was conferred upon him for having shot down two militants in an operation in the North East.

Lt Gen. T.K. Sapru, General Officer Commanding in Chief of the Western Command of the Indian Army on Sunday reviewed the investiture parade.

After which, he gave away awards for gallantry to 18 personnel and for devotion to duty and distinguished services to 36 others. The parade commanded by Maj. Gen. K.J.S. Oberoi had contingents from 61 Cavalry, seven infantry regiments and the territorial army. Various components of mechanised forces, artillery, engineers and a motorcycle display team of the Military Police also participated.

Another 13 personnel received Sena Medals for devotion to duty and alance 23 personnel were awarded the Vishishst Seva Medals.
