The Army on Thursday ruled out induction of fresh troops in Jammu and Kashmir but said re-deployment of forces will be carried out on the basis of intelligence inputs to counter infiltration and combat terrorism.

"There is no requirement of extra troops. We have enough troops under the Northern Command. It is just a question of positioning them, re-deploying them and making them more dynamic to check infiltration and deal with terrorism," Army chief Gen JJ Singh said after a function to honour two mountaineering expeditions, which scaled Himalayan peaks.

Asked if there was any move to step up troop presence along the Line of Control in J&K, he said "there is no such move...Counter infiltration strategy is a three-tier one and we have to spring some surprises for them (terrorists)".

Observing that the terrorists will always try to find ways of getting into Indian territory, Gen Singh said two terrorists, who had recently surrendered in forward districts in Kashmir, had told the Army that they had come into India from Pakistan via Nepal.

Gen Singh had on Wednesday chaired a high-level meeting to take stock of the situation in J&K including the infiltration levels. The meeting, which was attended by Home Secretary VK Duggal, had taken a serious note of the terror infrastructure still "intact" across the LoC.
