THE FIFTH Young Blood Shooting Championship began at the Pandey Hall (Infantry School) on Monday. Infantry School Commandant Lt Gen Satyevir Yadav declared the championship open at the colourful ceremony and welcomed participants from the various regimental centres of the Army.
Addressing the gathering, Lt Gen Yadav exhorted the players to participate in the true sportsman spirit and avoid using any unfair means. For the first time, the event is not conducted by the officers but by the junior commissioned officers (JCOs) and jawans. Only three officers will supervise the contest, he added.
The aim of the annual championship is to tap the talent of young recruits for the Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU) that have trained ace shooters like Lt Col Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Pemba Tamang, Vijay Kumar and Bhagirath Samai.
The Infantry School release stated that the promising shooters picked up from the previous Army Rifle Association Championship have done the country proud by winning medals at the national and international meets.
The total medal tally of the AMU is 142 gold, 87 silver and 63 bronze medals in international events and 1,147 gold, 987 silver and 912 bronze medals in national meets.
