GRP sources said the district magistrate and the superintendent of police had written a number of times for the removal of the shells from the malkhana.

A 30-member army team, including two bomb disposal experts, took charge of the shells.

The armymen, led by Lt Col Joydeep Singh Sandhu, took the shells to the banks of the Damodar river, buried them in three foot deep pits and detonated, sources said.

The sources could not cast light on how the shells were seized from a train 17 years ago.
