Arunachal Pradesh government has expressed confidence that the state will be able to compete with China in trade once the border, the state shares with Tibet, is reopened at different points.
Chief Minister Gegong Apang visited Bumla, 40 km from Tawang towanship near India-China border, to explore possibilities of reopening border trade through the pass, official sources said on Tuesday.
He was accompanied by Deputy Commissioner K Kholie, commanding officer in-command of the Bumla sector Col Shailendra Singh and local MLA Tsewang Dondup.
Apang said, "We need reopening of border trade, which will also enable us to earn revenue. Although they are well off in electronic goods, we could compete with them in terms items like horticultural produces, vegetables, herbs and medicinal and aromatic plants," the sources said.
On October 30, Apang had led a high level central team to Kibitho in Anjaw district to explore the potential of reopening border trade there.
Arunachal shares 1080 km border with China, 440 km with Myanmar and 160 km with Bhutan. The state has been demanding construction of border roads and reopening of border trades to boost its economy.
