Legislators in Arunachal Pradesh are reportedly divided over the move to advance the assembly election due in October and hold it simultaneously with the Lok Sabha polls likely to be held in April or May.
To the 60-member state assembly due in October, the simultenous elections is hotly debated in political circles since the announcement of the APCC chief and PWD minister Nabam Tuki last week that the party is ready to face both Lok Sabha and Assembly election simultenously if the election commission asks for it.
Union minister of state in the PMO Prithviraj Chavan, who is scheduled to visit Itanagar to take part in the statehood day function on February 20, will assess the sentiments of the state party leaders on the issue, party sources said.
Chavan, who is AICC general secretary in charge of Arunachal Pradesh, had a meeting with Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu and APCC chief Tuki in New Delhi on Monday and discussed the issue.
Those who advocate for simultaneous elections argue that it will be prudent to cash in on the good image of the party following granting of a huge Rs 20,000 crore package by the Prime Minister to the state.
