A 24-year-old youth from Arunachal Pradesh on Wednesday conquered the Mount Everest, becoming the first from the state to achieve the feat.
"Tapi Mra scaled the 8,848 m peak at 6.40 am today after beginning his climb at 9 pm yesterday from camp four," Taro Chatung, a local journalist and one of the promoters of the youngster's expedition, said here. The information was given to him by a representative of a Nepal-based company, which organised the expedition, he said.
Mra is among the two Indian mountaineers to scale the Everest today. Nineteen-year-old Krishna Patil of Pune too scaled the peak to became the first Maharashtrian woman to reach the top of the world. Mra had reached the base camp on April 2 and spent over a month there for acclimatisation.
Mra hails from remote Raw village in Upper Subansiri district near the Sino-India border. As a lad he had climbed the 5,000 m high Dadikiri mountain near his village, Chatung said.
Mra had on a previous occasion told PTI that he was inspired by Bachendri Pal, the first Indian woman to reach the Everest top, whose feat he had heard over radio as there are no other medium of communication in his village.
He was trained at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling.
