Anil Kumar Singh, son of former minister late Basudev Prasad Singh was shot dead by unidentified assailants at Barari market last night, police said on Monday.

Anil (45), an advocate, was gunned down while returning home after purchasing groceries on Sunday around 9 pm.

Singh, who received bullet injuries in the head, was rushed to a local hospital where he was declared brought dead, the police said.

The reason behind the murder, apparently premeditated, was not not yet known, the police said.

Meanwhile, the sub-divisional town of Barari, also the assembly constituency of Anil's father Basudev Singh, who was a minister in the short-lived Janata party government of Ram Sunder Das, is observing a spontaneous bandh with markets closed and vehicular traffic very thin.

While 2456 down New Delhi-Guwahati Rajdhani Express (summer special) and 4084 down New Delhi-Alipurduar Mahananda express have been stopped near the western cabin, Katihar-Barauni passenger train has been halted at the eastern cabin at Karhagola station, railway sources said.

Efforts were on to persuade the agitators to lift the blockade, the sources said.
