Assam CM hints at possible recall of Governor
Assam Governor Lt General Ajai Singh and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi seems to be on a collision course again as Gogoi on Saturday hinted of a possible recall of the Governor.
The latest difference of opinion is over the intervention of Singh on the examination matters of the Gauhati University in the capacity as its Chancellor.
The Governor sought to use his discretionary power to give grace marks for some candidate who had failed in the MBBS examination. The incident shocked the academia and the Executive Council of the University refused to consider Chancellor's request.
"This is a shocking development. I totally disagree with the Governor. I had consulted the matter with the Advocate General and he too opined that Mr Singh had no right to intervene in the examination matters of the Gauhati University," Gogoi said.
Asked whether he would like to see the Governor recalled, the Chief Minister maintaining the protocol said: "I shall move to appropriate authority for that."
The Chief Minister was addressing mediapersons and later told that he would move the matter to the President.
Many from within the government blamed the Governor statement on the eve of Republic Day favouring stronger Army action against ULFA militants for the Kaopthar killings.
His statement came just a day after the date for the latest round of peace process with the ULFA was announced.
The Chief Minister made it clear that he was not happy with the Governor. "I do not agree with many of his views and I would move to appropriate authority in this regard," he said.
