The flood situation in Assam worsened on Sunday with the water level in the Brahmaputra and its tributaries rising following heavy rains in the catchment areas during the last 24 hours, official sources said here.
Six districts, Dhemaji, Hailakandi, Karimganj, Nalbari, Kamrup and Darrang, have been affected by the first wave of floods and more than 3.20 lakh people are reeling under the effect of the rising waters.
In Dhemaji district, the situation is critical with the river Jiadhol inundating vast areas while rail and road communication has been affected due to overflowing of flood waters.
The situation in Barak Valley remains grim with the water level of river Katakhal at Matijuri in Hailakandi district still flowing much above the danger mark.
In neighbouring Karimganj district, water levels in rivers Kushiara and Singla were also flowing above the danger level.
In severely affected Nalbari district, the water level of River Nona was rising and 109 villages with a population of more than 90,000 have been affected while the Kaithaluchi-Barama-Subankhata Road and Nalbari-Hajo-Guwahati Road closed due to the overflowing flood waters.
