The flood situation in Assam on Wednesday remained grim with vast tracts of land inundated as river Brahmaputra and its tributaries, despite the falling trend in their water levels, continued to flow above the danger mark, official sources said here.
The situation in the severely affected districts of Dhemaji, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, Darrang, Morigaon and Dhubri remained unchanged with vast areas inundated and rail and road communication disrupted in several places.
There was, however, a glimmer of hope in Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Nalbari, Goalpara, Barpeta and Kamrup districts as the Brahmaputra and its tributaries showed a receding trend though in most of the places it was still flowing above the red mark.
In Majuli, the world's largest river island, the situation continued to be critical as flood waters submerged 90 villages affecting more than 200 villagers while communication between Kamalabari to Kamalabari ghat, Garmur to Badati and Jengrai to Nayabazaar remains disrupted for nearly a month.
The current wave of floods has also inundated several national parks and sanctuaries in the state including the Kaziranga National Park, Nameri, Pobitora and Namdhapa affecting a huge population of wildlife and even leading to deaths of several animals.
