The flood situation in Assam on Friday turned grim with vast tracts of land inundated by the rising water of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries in several district of the state.
The Brahmaputra was flowing above the danger level in Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Morigaon and Lakhimpur, official sources said in Guwahati.
The situation in the world's largest river island, Majuli is turning critical as more than 160 villages with over two lakh population submerged under flood water.
According to a report from Morigaon district, the flood has affected at least 1.5 lakh people in Bhuragaon and Mayong revenue circles.
Pobitora wildlife sanctuary, situated in the western part of Mayong revenue circle, is completely under flood water with the animals taking shelter on the raised highlands.
A major portion of the Kaziranga National Park, a world heritage site and home to the endangered one-horned rhinos, has been submerged under the Brahmaputra.
