Two persons were killed and 28 others injured in an explosion triggered by suspected Ulfa (Independent) at a market at Rajgarh under Maran police station in Dibrugarh district of the state on Sunday evening.

Police said that the incident took place when vegetables were being loaded into trucks during evenign in Rajgarh market.

“Till now two persons have died. We are yet to ascertain what kind of blast it is as we have not found any explosives from the site. Most of the injured have been admitted at Assam Medical College hospital”, said Rana Bhuyan , SP of Dibrugarh district.

Bhuyan said that there was an intelligence input about Ulfa (I) cadres' movements in the entire upper Assam districts including Dibrugarh. A crater was formed at the site of the blast, Bhuyan added.

The two dead persons have been identified as Manilal Gupta (55) and Akbar Ali (16). Out of the 28 injured, eight persons have been stated to be critical. Two police constables were also injured in the blast.

This explosion takes place at a time when security measures have been intensified across the state ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and home minister Rajnath Singh’s visit for the All India Directors-General of Police conference in Guwahati on November 29 and 30.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi earlier in the day tweeted that his government has been able to contain all forms of terrorism following a slew of security measures.

“We will also deal very firmly with jehadi groups and foil their sinister designs to set up base in Assam. Security measures have been put in place to ensure that the wheels of development move on”, Gogoi tweeted.
