State chief secretary KAH Subramanian confirmed on Friday that 40 government doctors were suspended for dereliction of duty in flood-hit districts.

Sources in the health department said top officials were irked by the absence of doctors in flood-affected rural areas.

Due to the absence of doctors in hospitals and health centres in flood affected areas, health facilities have almost collapsed.

"At a time when you need doctors, they are absent and hardly bother to provide treatment to hundreds of helpless people," said a senior health official.

"No one would be spared if found guilty," said Subramanian.

Most government doctors have been busy doing private practice and making money in state capital Patna.
