An army spokesman said one blast had hit a bus carrying passengers near the town, causing casualties.

He said it appeared from early information that the second blast had hit another bus in the same area.

It was not immediately clear what had caused the explosions, which occurred a day before the second anniversary of the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri.

Bikfaya is the home town of former President Amin Gemayel, whose son Pierre was assassinated in November.
