TO COPE with the fast changing academic atmosphere, the Department of Commerce of Allahabad University (AU) is all set to undertake an ambitious project of digitalising its library and provide Net connections to its students soon.

The department has prepared a detailed project in this regard and also forwarded it the VC's office for approval.
Informing about the project the Dean and Head of Department of Commerce Prof Raj Shekhar said " The department has sufficient facilities to cater to the needs of the students, however the department needs modernisation. We want to make the department electronically viable and smarter."
"For the purpose the classrooms will be provided Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) screens, Over Head Projectors (OHP) and other sophisticated equipment for audio-visual presentation. The library which has the latest collection of books at its disposal will now become digitalised", said Prof Shekhar.
"Computers, printers, modems, CD-ROMs and several other gadgets will also be installed to provide any type of information to the students through internet and electronic version of the study materials ", he said.
Prof Shekhar said, " A proposal of Rs 5 lakh for upgradation has been sent to the VC for approval and the department is likely get these equipment and gadgets very soon. Digitalisation of the library is an expensive and time taking process and needs experts for accomplishment of the job. We have sent the proposal to the varsity and expect the varsity to appoint an appropriate body for digitalisation of the library."

{{/usCountry}}Prof Shekhar said that with computerisation the students will get a modern academic environment and can enrich themselves with world class knowledge through access to the internet. Journals, reference books, information can be downloaded and made available to the students in the library.
"Besides this the students can access other digital libraries through net and go through the electronic version of several study materials available on Net and in the market. The computerisation will also provide opportunity to the students to make proper use of the information technology and make them acquainted with modern sophisticated equipment", added Prof Shekhar.
