UNIVERSITY GRANTS Commission (UGC) chairman Prof Sukhadeo Thorat on Friday said that after attaining the Central status, Allahabad University had become accountable not only to Uttar Pradesh alone but to the whole nation.
He said the university should strive to acquire national character and build up an infrastructure that could help the teachers and students to perform their best.
Speaking at a function organised to commemorate AU’s completion of one year of attaining central status, Prof Thorat said physical infrastructure, qualified faculty as well as quality and composition of students were three important pillars of a university and efforts should be made to formulate rules and regulations in a manner that the varsity acquired a national character.
Open and centralised admission along with matching recruitment policies would help the varsity to draw teachers and students from all parts of the country with due share of locals. “Course and curriculum should be according to national standards and as demanded by the students. Courses should have inbuilt research components as excellence can not be attained by repeated teaching of similar topics,” he said.
Prof Thorat said steps taken towards the development of a university play a role in propagating higher education. AU Vice-Chancellor Prof RG Harshe in his welcome speech said that negative attitude, cynical ideas and culture of irreverence should be overcome and everyone should collectively work in a sustained and planned manner to achieve academic excellence. He emphasised on use of English and computers to keep abreast with the competitors. Prof Harshe presented a memento to chief guest Prof Thorat on the occasion.

{{/usCountry}}Earlier, the function started with lighting of lamps by the chief guest followed by ‘Saraswati Vandana’ and ‘Kulgeet’ presented by the students.
Prof Ravi Srivastava from JNU introduced the chief guest while AU Registrar Prof US Rai proposed the vote of thanks. Prof VC Pandey conducted the function.
