THE ALLAHABAD University students burnt the effigy of HRD Minister Arjun Singh at the AUU hall here on Monday. They were protesting against the decision to reduce the number of seats in UG and PG courses in the Allahabad University.
Earlier, the State Government had increased the number of seats in all state universities. But just as the AU became a central university, the number of seats increased by the State Government, were reduced.
The students also held a meeting.
Addressing the meeting, a student leader Ziya Qunane Rizvi said that the AU administration should not decrease the number of seats in PG and UG courses.
Student leader Avinash Singh said that the fee hike in comparative literature, computer maintenance and photography departments should be reduced. They said that if the AU authorities did not accept their demands, they would observe fast.
Rizvi praised Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh’s decision to increase the number of seats in central universities.
Student Leader Samar Bahadur Singh raised the issue of fee structure of AU hostels and said that the fee should be charged from the students on par with the Jawahar Lal Nehru University and the Banaras Hindu University.
