Russian starlet Maria Sharapova made short work of Germany's Sandra Kloesel in the opening round of the Australian Open on Monday, cruising past her in under an hour.

The fourth seed, who is still recovering from problems stemming from a dislocated rib, gave away just three games in her 6-2, 6-1 victory and will now play Ashley Harkleroad, an American qualifier.
