ALLAHABAD UNIVERSITY Teachers Association (AUTA) president Prof Ram Kishor Shastri extended moral support to the students sitting on fast- unto- death on the second day of their protest on Saturday. Bahujan Chhatra Sabha (BCS) convener Shiv Babu Saroj informed that the students also gheraoed the finance officer of the varsity.
BCS members of Allahabad University Rajesh Saroj, Rajesh Yadav, Pawan Rao, Nirbhay Narayan and Dinesh Singh Yadav demanded disbursement of scholarships to SC/ST candidates, increase in number of seats in research programmes, evacuation of seats after minimum time limit by the research scholars, reservation in research programmes and recruitment of teachers and employees under SC/ST quota.
The commercial officer of AU, informed the protesting students that a message regarding the protest and demand for immediate release of SC/ST scholarships had been faxed to the State Government.
Meanwhile, AU Students Union president Ajit Kumar Yadav demanded immediate disbursement of the scholarships for 2004-05 and 2005-06 as demanded by the students on fast- unto -death.
Yadav said the delay in the distribution of the scholarships was due to the error committed by the AU administration. It was the responsibility of the varsity to disburse the scholarships immediately to SC/ST students and students below poverty line, he said. He asked the student leaders to assemble at the union hall on Monday to discuss the future plan of action to be taken in support of the protesting students.
