WITHIN 60 days a fifth place in the City has come on the radar of Chikungunya affliction, with rumours of the disease having spread in Kulkarni Ka Bhatta doing the rounds on Wednesday. The rumour got wings due to the death of another patient at Maharaja Yeshwant Rao Hospital (MYH), allegedly due to the disease.
CMHO Dr K K Vijayvergiya said that a disease showing similar symptoms had occurred in the recent past, but all cases turned out to be that of viral fever. It was premature to term the disease as Chikungunya. A team from the department had gone to conduct tests and prepared slides and the results would be available by tomorrow.
MYH Superintendent Dr D K Jain, faced with several queries in this regard, himself got this story checked from the Medicine Department, which falsified the story. Dr Jain said “any talk of a death resulting in the hospital from Chikungunya was wrong and as per record no death had even occurred from severe flu, which has symptoms close enough to have been confused with the disease.”
The City had seen frenzied activity in Azad Nagar, which has a population of about 4,500, when the suspicion of Chikungunya first arose. However, despite most of the populace displaying symptoms quite closely resembling Chikungunya it could not be affirmed in tests conducted by the health department, which claimed it was a viral infection.

{{/usCountry}}A similar disease was reported in Asharfi Nagar colony having a population of about 3,500. However, the tests conducted turned negative and 25 samples were collected and sent for testing at NICD, New Delhi.
Later an outbreak of a similar disease was reported in Babulal Nagar having a population of about 2,500. The health department after running tests for malaria declared the patients to be suffering from viral infection.
