A day after Hindustan Times reported about tampered weighing machines being used at an outlet of Safal — the grocery chain of Mother Dairy — the authorities swung into action and ordered a probe into the matter.
Following complaints from the residents of Sushant Lok, HT conducted a reality check on Tuesday at the Safal outlet of the area and found that consumers get 30 gram less than the weight of fruits or vegetables shown on the machine’s indicator. The management sacked the store-keeper on Tuesday.
“On the basis of the media report and consumers’ feedback, we have suspended the store-keeper and initiated an enquiry into the matter. Conclusive decisions will be taken on the basis of evidence. However, in order to ensure hassle-free services to the consumers, the booth has been kept operational,” said Debashis Das, general manager, and head corporate communications, Mother Dairy.
On Wednesday, the residents staged a protest at Safal’s Sushant Lok outlet and demanded that all the staff manning the outlet be changed so that such malpractices could be controlled.
There are a total of 19 Safal outlets in the district while five are big stores like the one at Sushant Lok. Thousands of customers make their purchases from these outlets on a daily basis.
