Policemen posted in the Maoist-hit Gadchiroli district will get an unusual booster to deal with the difficult conditions they work in – chyawanprash. The Gadchilroli police have decided to distribute among them bottles of the ayurvedic preparation known for strengthening immunity.
“Police personnel in Gadchiroli have to roam the forests for long periods of time. The temperature fluctuations takes a toll on them and they have to battle diseases like malaria and ailments like diarrhoea,” said a police circular, of which HT has a copy.
The initiative was started last week, when C Vidyasagar Rao, the governor of the state, visited Gadchiroli. He felicitated officers who were awarded the President’s medal for exemplary service. “A total of 23 officers had received the President’s medal on August 15, of which some were felicitated on Thursday. The distribution of chyawanprash bottles was started with these officers,” said a police officer.
The bottles will now be distributed to the 6,000-odd police personnel in the region.
Recently, the Gadchiroli police won appreciation for ensuring peaceful Assembly polls in the region. In the 2009 state elections, Gadchiroli had seen 66% voter turnout. This time, the turnout went up to 72%.

{{/usCountry}}“The chyawanprash distribution is an attempt to ensure policemen remain healthy in the tough conditions they have to battle,” said a police officer.
Officers also said they are focusing on enhancing their network in the villages, so they receive information about planned Maoist operations. Gadchiroli police personnel said they have arrested seven extremists in the past month.
