Azad’s government was reduced to minority after the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), a partner in the government with Congress, pulled out on Saturday over the land row with Shri Amarnath Shrine Board.

Three people had died and over 500 were injured in protests that broke out against the land transfer.

The Chief Minister had then said there was no threat to his government and he enjoyed the support of the requisite number of legislators. On Sunday Azad wrote to the Governor saying he was ready to prove a majority whenever ‘his Excellency wanted.’

The 24-member National Conference (NC), the single largest party, has declared it would vote against Azad. Setting aside speculation, NC president Omar Abdullah on Sunday said that abstaining from voting was tantamount to supporting Azad.

He said his party legislators would remain present in the House whenever it was called for session and would vote against the government. On Monday, the NC legislature party met in Srinagar to chalk out a voting strategy.
