A day after he was expelled from the Samajwadi Party for six years for indulging in anti-party activities, Azam Khan on Sunday urged the party leadership to reconsider the decision.
"In the interest of the organisation, I request the SP leadership to reconsider my expulsion," he told reporter in Rampur.
The 60-year-old Khan, SP's Muslim face and one of its founder members, however, parried questions whether he would withdraw his tirade against party general secretary Amar Singh and newly-elected Rampur MP Jaya Prada.
Khan was expelled from the party on grounds of anti-party activities and indiscipline, capping weeks of bitter feud in the top leadership.
He had locked horns with the SP leadership weeks before the Lok Sabha elections over the party getting close to former BJP leader Kalyan Singh and its choice of actor-turned-politician Jaya Prada as candidate from his home turf in Rampur, from where he won as an SP MLA.
Attacking Amar Singh, he said the SP general secretary was pushing the party to the brink of destruction and added that he as also other socialist leaders did not want to see the party ruined.
