Azharuddin, who was banned by BCCI from playing cricket after the match-fixing scam in the 1990s, is keeping a low profile since then. He and his actress wife Sangeeta Bijlani shuttled between Mumbai and Hyderabad, concentrating on their event management and fitness businesses.

Sources said that Azharuddin is seeking a quid pro quo as per which the BCCI case against him, which has tainted his image, would be settled out of court and in return he would help Congress party in the state. He is said to have met Congress President Sonia Gandhi at Delhi in this regard.

However, sources close to the cricketer denied that there was any move to contest elections.

Last year there was speculation that he would join the Telangana-centric TRS party after he had an hour long luncheon meeting with TRS founder K Chandrasekhar Rao. But apparently the plan did not work out.
