The DU colleges are getting tech-savvy and that is bad news if you try to gain admission with a fake certificate. Abhishek Gaur realised this, a tad late, on Wednesday. The Hindu College authorities caught him out after they accessed his CBSE marks online and realised that the 19-year-old had submitted a cleverly forged certificate.
Gaur, who is reportedly the son of an IAS officer posted in Bareilly, UP, had applied for physics honours but had got only about 70 per cent in Class XII. Kavita Sharma, principal of Hindu, said the boy had increased his score by 64 marks which put him in the 90 per cent bracket. Thirty marks were added to mathematics, 24 to chemistry and 10 to English.
“Even if one does not make the grade, one just wants to get admitted to a particular college by hook or by crook,” said Sharma.
Gaur was handed over to the police by the college authorities. Police sources said the boy claimed he was a student of DPS RK Puram.
Gaur had apparently scanned his CBSE certificate and then fudged the marks on a computer. But Hindu -- like most DU colleges -- have started scanning certificates this year. The colleges have also been provided with CDs containing results of boards like the CBSE and the ISC. Also, as a DU official pointed out, the results of most state boards could be accessed online.
So when there are doubts about the authenticity of a certificate -- sometimes its thickness can give it away -- the marks are immediately crosschecked. A teacher at Zakir Hussain College said certificates were even sent back to boards for verification.
