"The water level in the drain was high due to heavy rains last night and the boy was swept away due to strong currents," police said.

The boy's parents, who are labourers, were in the house when the incident occurred.

The drain is around two and half feet wide and situated around 20 metres away from his house.

A team of 120 personnel, including fire officials, local civic authorities and police were rushed to the spot and have launched search operations for the missing infant, they said.

In a similar incident, on May 31, a six-year-old boy accidentally fell into an open storm water drain while walking along with his mother. All efforts to trace his body by the army had failed.
