Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had a special word and a pat on the back for the youngest of them all. Nine-year-old wunderkid Ajay Puri, the youngest web designer, was invited on to the dais and given a warm hug by the PM.

"You will make India proud. I am proud of you, keep it up," Singh told Ajay, a fifthgrader at Harrow International School, Bangkok.

Ajay had designed his own website — – at the incredible age of three. “The website is all about me. What I know about computers and who I’ve met," he said. The list of those he’s met is pretty impressive — Bill Gates, Bill Clinton, AB Vajpayee and NR Narayana Murthy. Gates even allowed Ajay to pre-fix his firm’s name on the website as it was designed with the help of a Mircrosoft programme (Microsoft Front Page 2000).

"Mr Gates told me, ‘You are going to take my job in India’. I replied, ‘Your grandfather was the vice-president of a bank, my grandfather was vice-president of a company. Your great-grandfather was in politics, my great-grandfather was in politics (the late Acharya Narendra Dev). You have wealth, I have health’," Ajay told this correspondent.

Ajay’s grandfather, Bishnu Narayan Puri, who taught him how to work the computer keyboard, said: “He picked up the alphabets when he was two and even reproduced a commercial letter on a computer within a year. Then, I asked his father (Ravi Puri, marketing manager with Century Textiles, Bangkok) to teach him Microsoft Word and other programmes. Now, he knows how to video conference on the net and wants to learn how to make a digital movie.” Ajay’s next goal — to enter the Guinness Book of World Records as the youngest animator. “We were told by the publishers that there was no category for the youngest web designer and that we should write to them when he (Ajay) turns animator,” Puri said.

Despite neing a net worm, Ajay doesn’t fit the description of a copy-book geek. “I have won a gold medal in swimming at school and spend hours playing cricket and football with my younger brother Adarsh (6),” he said.
