Tomar later justified the act, saying it was tradition of the region to fire in the air to express joy or welcome a guest.

The BJYM and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers had gathered at the railway station in large numbers to welcome their leader, who was on his maiden visit after being elected as the State party chief.

The workers sought permission to fire in the air from the sub-divisional magistrate (SDM), who granted them oral permission. Sources said that though the workers may have fired more than 101 fires.

The workers extended a rousing welcome to Tomar. They had put up welcome arches all along the route from station to BJP office Mukherjee Bhawan.

The workers burst firecrackers and shouted slogans of ‘Narendra Singh Zindabad’. There was enthusiasm among workers and they vied with each other to garland their leader.

BJYM workers weighed Tomar against blood donated by workers at Jayendraganj Square. At many places he was weighed against laddoos, fruits and coins.
