The Delhi High Court’s ban on interviews of children for admission to nursery classes stays — at least for this year. The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain the petitions of two unaided private schools which had challenged the ban.
A bench of justices KG Balakrishnan and DK Jain said the Ashok Ganguly Committee recommendations on nursery admissions should be implemented on a trial basis. “Let us give it a try. It may enhance your suggestions. Based on your experience, you can come out with better suggestions,” the court told lawyers representing Shriram School and Vasant Valley School.
On the submission of the schools that they were not even allowed to interact with the parents of children seeking admission, the bench said: “We have all been to interactive sessions. We know what happens there.”
The bench, however, said the high court’s orders of September 17 and December 8, directing the schools to follow the 100-point criteria for nursery admission, were not final. The high court had asked schools to follow it only for a year, it said.
The bench asked the schools to submit their suggestions before the high court, which would hear the matter on January 17. Manju Bharat Ram, chairperson of the SRF Foundation that runs Shriram Schools, told HT: “I hope the high court takes cognizance of this and listens to our objections more seriously.” Vasant Valley director Arun Kapur was not available for comment.
