The all-India strike called by the Opposition and a traders’ association may affect life in Delhi and other NCR towns on Thursday.
The shutdown is in protest against the central government’s decision to hike diesel prices, allow FDI in multi-brand retail and limit subsidised cooking gas.
Although public transport in Delhi — buses, auto-rickshaws, taxis and metro rail — is likely to be normal, shops and markets will remain closed.
The mobility of people in Ghaziabad and Noida in Uttar Pradesh — ruled by the Samajwadi Party, which has called a statewide bandh independently — will be affected because auto unions have decided to join the strike.
Although the UP government has not ordered schools to remain closed, some private institutions in these areas have declared a holiday on Thursday.
There may be traffic disruption in Delhi in areas such as Akshardham temple, Vikas Marg, and Shahadra in east Delhi, Chandni Chowk in the walled city, and Rohini in northwest Delhi, where the BJP will stage protests during peak hours in the morning.
Praveen Khandelwal, national secretary-general of the Confederation of All India Traders, said, “More than 500,000 traders belonging to over 1,000 traders’ associations in Delhi and about 500,000 in NCR cities will participate in the bandh.”
