The Bandhwari solid waste treatment plant, which processes 1,000 metric tonne of waste collected from Gurgaon and Faridabad every day, is out of order. Both the processing units at the plant have developed some technical snags which are not expected to be fixed before two-three days.
The facility, located on the Faridabad Expressway, is managed by a private concessionaire. Gurgaon alone generates about 600 tonne of waste per day.
On getting the news, Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) officials swung into action and inspected the plant. They told the concessionaire firm, AKC Developers, to fix the fault within the next 24 hours.
The concessionaire, however, said it was a “minor” machinery fault.
“We are doing our best and it will be rectified at the earliest. It is a minor fault,” said Irfan Furniturewala, one of the directors at AKC Developers.
If the problem at the plant persists for long, the landfill site will be overloaded with waste collected from the two cities, fear MCG officials.
“The plant has two processing units. Both went out of order due to some machinery fault. We hope the concessionaire will rectify the error within 24 hours,” said MCG medical officer Dr Sumit Dhankhar, who inspected the plant along with engineers on Monday.
Dhankhar told Hindustan Times that one of the two units was made functional hardly a week ago.Since its inception in 2010, the plant had been functioning only with one unit. The other unit had been made functional only recently, he said.
