A 35-year-old man employed with a private company was arrested by the Cyber police for allegedly trying to defame ICICI bank by circulating e-mails containing offensive content about the bank.

Wamsi Krishna, a resident of Navi Mumbai, was arrested after Amarnath Gupta (34), senior regional manager of ICICI bank’s Chandivli-based branch, registered a complaint against him.

“Krishna had created a fake e-mail ID with the name ‘Kamath’. Using this ID, he composed several emails stating ICICI Bank was cheating its customers in various ways,” revealed a senior police official.

“The emails also mentioned that the bank was involved in a number of malpractices because of which the World Bank Association had blacklisted it,” he said.

The official added that using the fake ID, Krishna sent the offensive emails to many people, including customers, private companies and employees at the bank.

Senior Inspector Ravindra Bhide, of Cyber Police Station said: “We have registered the FIR as per the complaint by the bank. However, I cannot reveal the details of the case as it is under investigation.”

“However, when Gupta was verifying the documents he found that a couple of documents were forged. Subsequently, Gupta approached the company where Krishna was employed. Inquiries with his employer revealed that Krishna had used the same forged documents for securing the job in his company,” the official added.

Following this, the ICICI rejected the loan application.

“But Krishna who bore a grudge against ICICI, decided to defame the bank which would affect its clientele. He sent offensive mails to tarnish the image of the bank,” said another official.

The police found out the emails were sent from a cyber café in Navi Mumbai.
