The counting for Uttar Pradesh Bar Council election-2005 entered an interesting phase when Rohitashwa Kumar Agarwal, a Meerut-based lawyer, obtained the quota fixed by the Bar Council to be declared elected as member of Bar Council. Rohitashwa is the third candidate in the row to be declared elected as member of Bar Council of UP. At present, Rohitashwa is the chairman of Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh. It is the second term of Rohitashwa in the Bar council of Uttar Pradesh, the apex body of the lawyers of the state.

According to unofficial sources, a Lucknow -based lawyer Gopal Narain Mishra has also obtained a quota of 3,380 votes for being declared elected as member of Bar Council of UP. However, the official announcement to this effect will be made on Tuesday. Thus, Mishra will be the fourth candidate in the row to be declared elected as member of Bar Council of UP.
A law graduate from Meerut College, Meerut, Rohitashwa joined the legal practice at District Court in Meerut in 1976. He was twice elected as president of the Bar Association of Meerut District Court. Besides, he was thrice elected as general secretary of Bar Association of Meerut District Court. He was elected as chairman of Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh on October 12, 2005.
Earlier, Nakul Dubey, a Lucknow -based lawyer, was declared elected as the first winning candidate of the Bar Council of UP. The second candidate to be declared elected was Ajay Yadav, a lawyer of Allahabad High Court. Rohitashwa has now become the third candidate in the row to be declared elected as member of Bar Council, UP.
It was on Monday that a Varanasi-based lawyer Shri Nath Tripathi was eliminated from the contest. The votes obtained by Tripathi were added to the votes of other candidates.
At present, the elimination process of Akhilesh Kumar Awasthi, a Lucknow -based lawyer, is going on. Now, nine candidates remain to be eliminated from the contest. This process of elimination of candidates from the contest will continue till 25 members remain left, who will ultimately be declared elected as Members of Bar Council of UP. Among these 25 elected Members, a chairman and a vice-chairman will be elected for a period of one year. Besides, out of these 25 elected members, one member will be elected to the Bar Council of India, the apex body of the lawyers of the country.
The Bar Council, a statutory body, enrolls the lawyers, formulates welfare policies for them, takes action in case of professional misconduct by lawyers and also implements several other schemes for the lawyers of the State.
Condolence meeting A FULL court condolence meeting was held in the court room of the Chief Justice to mourn the death of Rajeshwari Sahai, a lawyer of Allahabad High Court.
Judges and lawyers observed two minutes silence as a mark of respect to the departed soul. Later, the Allahabad High Court Bar Association (HCBA) also organised a condolence meeting, under the presidentship of Sanjiv Kumar Pandey, vice president of HCBA, which was conducted by joint secretary Alok Sharma.
The lawyers also observed two minutes silence.
Others who attended the condolence meeting included joint secretaries- PS Mishra, OP Tiwari, members of the governing council of HCBA Anil Pathak, Pushpa Singh, Atul Kumar Pandey, Santosh Singh and others.
