Police on Monday said they solved the murder case after arresting a 25-year-old man, Mahendra Kumar, with whom the deceased, Paludevi, had been in touch over telephone for several months.

The police said Kumar, a resident of Sindhary in Barmer district of Rajasthan, admitted to killing Paludevi in her home in Ravatsar village of the same district.

Mahendra and Paludevi had developed a relationship over telephone conversations without the former having any idea about her age, the police said. On the fateful day, Paludevi called him home saying she was alone.

The accused has told the police he felt “disturbed” when he found out that Paludevi was a middle aged woman. And when he told her he wanted to leave, she threatened to frame him.

The accused has told the police that he committed the crime to “save himself” because he felt “frightened” and believed she might expose him.

Barmer Sadar Police Station had filed a case of murder on October 20 on the basis of the complaint filed by Paludevi’s brother-in-law Babulal.

The police got the breakthrough after investigating the call details of the deceased—though her cell phone had gone missing from the crime spot— which revealed the accused had been in contact with her for several months.
